“Don’t slight the importance of the simple things.” Ever notice how things you are no longer attentive to (the basics, foot position, knees out, proper technique) fade? It can be as simple as your first pair of Nanos that you purchased. You used to wear them all the time until you got a new pair (added 15 lbs. to your lift with no care about technique) and now the old pair (the basics) are irrelevant. This brings me to my point. This week we move into yet another cycle: Olympic Lifting. We’ll be here for five weeks. During this time, seldom, if ever, will we go above 80% or Max out. You may not even experience the latter. (Don’t worry, there will be conditioning as well). Why is this? The reason is to batten down the hatches, so to speak, so when we do Max out you will not be as quick, as you may have been in the past (out of habit), to abandon the basics, technique, for load. Speed is key! Every time you approach the bar, which is analogous to yourself pushed out into the world, lift it (your higher consciousness) with purpose. Your purpose is to accelerate the barbell with proper technique? Hence the word proper. Don’t worry about load as that is a fool’s end, a wicked trap that awaits you. Focus instead on the long-term development of power and leg strength. Some of the most powerful athletes (in my opinion) on this planet are powerlifters, olympic lifters; sprinters; boxers; and, your beloved, CrossFit athletes.
