Strong is Beautiful Recently, one of my close friends shared some personal information when she revealed her longtime struggles with severe anxiety. She talked about her constant worrying and frequent panic attacks that have been present since a young age. Thankfully, she has found something that has helped her deal with her anxiety and mental struggles in CrossFit. If you were to meet my friend today, you probably would not think she was a young girl who spent days crying and wondering if she would ever find “happiness.” Today, she’s a ball of energy and a positive, hard-working student, athlete, friend, daughter, sister, & coach. She is strong. For me, my friend’s revelation made me reflect…. We all live our day-to-day lives rushing around and interacting with others while rarely stopping to think about those around us and their struggles. In reality, whether it is addressed or not…everybody has something. Everyone has lost a loved one, fought an addiction, or struggled with a conflict whether internal or external. The problem is that too often people feel the need to hide themselves, their problems, and their battles. Rather than confiding in a friend, a teammate, or a loved one, we keep our “issues” bottled up until we self-destruct. This is where I have truly seen the importance of CrossFit’s role in many peoples lives. While the box is a place to push yourself, test your limits, and de-stress, it also becomes a home with a second family. It becomes a place where you can trust that people will be there for you and help in what ever way possible. Whether it’s post-WOD stretching and venting about a problem at work or finding a buddy to help you make some time for yourself, I’ve seen CrossFit change not only people’s bodies but, more importantly, change people’s minds. Personally, I’ve felt an incredible change in self-image over my 2 and a half years at CFG. I see that it provides everyone – men, women, old, young, black, white – a sense of self-confidence that many will never experience. I think about my 16-month-old niece, Emilia, and the self-image she will have if she chooses to CrossFit, weightlift, or participate in any organized sport (which, by the way, is quite likely in a family like mine). I think about how we continue to push peoples’ opinions and change the perception of “female beauty.” Rather than living and dying by the number on the scale, women care more about the weight on their barbell. Most importantly, we support each other and each other’s goals through ups, downs, good days, and bad days. We make each other strong. And ultimately..strong is beautiful. “We rise by lifting others.” – Robert Ingersoll -Coach Catherine
