We have, at every moment in our lives, the choice to do what is right to benefit ourselves but seldom, if ever, do we make that choice. Instead we fall prey to our habitual senses which deny us the reality we seek. My mother has a common sense approach to make me understand this when I find myself making the same mistake: “Do what you have always done, and you will get what you have always gotten.” Habit, strangely enough, permits us from seeing that which is possible. It renders us blind, so to speak. Yank the bar off of the floor the same way you have always done and you will be met with the same results each and every time: Forward in your toes, rising too rapidly, bent arms, out of position, and, my favorite of all time, doing a double move with the elbows while catching the bar in the rack position. I wonder what the athlete is thinking to themselves as they do the latter out of habit. What are they holding onto that keeps them from dropping three inches under the bar to secure it in the catch position with their shoulders? What are they holding onto so tight in LIFE that they just can’t let it go? I mean, open your hands for crying out loud and let it go. Let go of the fear; the doubt; the habit. Accommodate the bar. This is where learning to feel the thing inexperienced as though real is so, so vitally important. Visualize yourself opening your hands during the catch. This will place you in the right sensory context and remove you from the entanglement of habit you find yourself in. During this week of Olympic training, challenge yourself to gradually open your hands and let go of the bar, dropping underneath it. You may just surprise yourself when you choose to do so.
